A crazy game that had everything imaginable from cards to goals and late drama!
Midlothian jumped to an early first half lead off to free kicks that James River did not defend well on. A 0-2 deficit had the Rapids worried, but they were able to pull one back before halftime after Kayla Siddiqi fought hard to stick with the play and bury the ball into an open net.
Second half started on a positive note for the Rapids as Hannah Calliott scored early on off a nice shot over the keeper’s head. Unfortunately, the Trojans pulled one back as well and went back up 2-3. The team took another hit after a tying goal was scored but eventually called back by the refereeing crew. In addition, the Rapids had a player sent off and had to play with only 10 players for a good remaining chunk of the second half and overtime. Ellie Simonpietri forced the overtime to be played after she stuck the ball low to the corner with a few minutes remaining.
Overtime began and the momentum was on the Rapids’ side. Rachel Leipold went for an aggressive dribble up the line and served up a nice cross to Hannah Calliott who buried the game winner in the first overtime. The Rapids played out the remaining overtime and hung on to win 4-3.
The Rapids will face Huguenot tonight at home at 5:45. Go Rapids!
