Game Recap

Article from The Times Dispatch:

James River’s girls soccer team, going up against Cosby, which had yet to lose or even tie a game this season, overcame early adversity. It also played well beyond its years, as the No. 9 Rapids served up a 4-1 home thumping and handed the No. 4 Titans their first loss of the season.

The Rapids’ starting 11 featured four freshman and three sophomores. Their resolve would be tested early as the Titans got the game’s first goal less than ten minutes in.

Ryland Powell delivered a dangerous free kick from the right wing that eluded the grasp of Rapids keeper Abby Rieck, falling to the feet of Becca Shelek. She pounced on the ball, scoring from a few feet out as Cosby took an early one-goal advantage.

James River shrugged off the early goal, controlling the attacking third for nearly the rest of the half. It used its exuberant attack and some veteran leadership to create the bulk of the chances in the first 40 minutes.

When left winger Lindsey Keith’s short-range shot was tipped onto the crossbar by Cosby goalkeeper Jenny Liston with just over 12 minutes to play in the first half, James River had every reason to wonder if a lucky bounce was to come its way. But Amanda Arnone’s play on the right wing was tireless, and with just three and a half minutes left in the first half, Arnone won a corner that led to the breakthrough for the Rapids.

James River striker Kiersten Hening flicked a half-volley past Liston’s near post on the ensuing corner, tying the score as the James River attack rounded off a good first half.

“The front three that we have is a very dynamic front three and very pacy,” said Rapids coach Ian Stowe of Arnone, Keith and Hening, “I give them the freedom to play. All three are very smart and they work well with each other, and especially with this being a new year for Lindsey and Amanda, those three have come along over the course of the first half of the season with their understanding of each other.”

Time still remained for James River to dole out more damage in the first half. Less than 90 seconds after Hening’s goal, the Rapids took the lead when defender Hunter Collier latched on to an indirect free kick touch from Hening, belting a stunning goal into the top right corner of the net that sent James River in hysterics on the field with a 2-1 lead in stoppage time to complete its turnaround.

“With the leadership that we’ve got with my captains Emily Crocco, Hunter Collier and and Kiersten Hening, they’ve been able to gather the girls and respond to certain scenarios like that,” said Stowe.

“It was unfortunate going that early on a goal like that, but I thought the response toward the end of the half was good.”
