David Hope – JRHS Varsity Lacrosse Head Coach
James River High School is proud to welcome our new Varsity Lacrosse Head Coach, David Hope. Coach Hope comes to us with a wealth of lacrosse experience. He attended and graduated from Norfolk Academy in 1984 where he was an individual State Champion in Swimming and a State Champion in Lacrosse in 1984. He took his lacrosse talents to VMI where he became the all-time leader at VMI in scoring (239 points) and goals (175) and still holds those record today. He is 6th on the all time assist list at VMI. He served as Team Captain in 1989. While at VMI he won the Intercollegiate Athletic Award twice and led the nation in goal scoring in 1987. Needless to say he is in the VMI Athletic Hall of Fame and is still on the NCAA record books as the 15th leading scorer in NCAA history.
Before coming to James River High School Coach Hope had an extensive coaching and refereeing career:
Assistant Coach at Virginia Wesleyan College 1990
- Assistant Head Coach at VMI 1991-1996
- Head Coach at Fork Union Military Academy – 2 years
- Head Coach at Steward School – 3 years
- Taught young men the game of lacrosse through the Geronimo Youth Lacrosse Program for 12 years
- He was also a High School Lacrosse Official for 15 years
After graduating with an English degree from VMI in 1989, Coach Hope spent the first part of his professional career as a Medical Operating Room Sales Representative. He currently owns a real estate business where he renovates and sells single-family homes. His wife Wendy is a Pre School Teacher at River Road Baptist Church. His son, Talmadge, plays lacrosse at Hamden Sydney and previously played for the Collegiate School. His two younger daughters are enrolled at Collegiate School. Coach Hope enjoys spending time with his family and obviously being around and teaching the game of Lacrosse.
We are so fortunate to have him leading our program and our JRHS community welcomes him! Go LAX Rapids!
