James River High School
Woodbridge High School
The Rapids had a tough road game vs Woodbridge High School in the Regional Quarterfinals last night! After nearly a three hour bus ride in I-95 traffic on Memorial Day, the Rapids were able to keep their season alive with a penalty shootout win! Their second shootout in as many games, this time the team was able to calm their nerves and finish the game strong with some wonderful penalty kicks.
During regulation, the Rapids dominated in possession for long periods of time until Woodbridge would strike back with some dangerous counter attacks! Amanda Arnone was able to break the deadlock for us early in the first half with wonderful cutback on the defender and near post finish on the keeper. The assist goes to senior Lindsey Manning after she played a wonderful through ball to Amanda to get on the end of. Juniors Kiersten Hening and Emily Crocco both showed up to the field during the first half after coming back from a showcase in Pennsylvania. Kiersten was able to hold the ball up for the team in the attacking third whereas Emily helped to solidify the backline.
The Rapids gave up a goal deep into the second half which forced play to go to overtime. We battled and had opportunities to score, as did Woodbridge. On one particular play, Kiersten Hening was able to deliver a perfect pass to Hunter Collier streaking into the six yard box but her header went over the bar in sudden death overtime. On to penalties!
Rapids scorers from the spot were Meghan Siedlecki, Lindsey Munyak, and Lauren Beachy. The fifth shot was not needed from us because Abby Rieck, the “WO”man of the match, had two penalty kick saves and forced the last shot to go over the bar to secure the win for us!
We travel to Flloyd Kellam High School on Wednesday for the Regional Semifinals at 5:00. Go Rapids!
