James River High School
Hanover High School
The Rapids secured their first regular season win on Friday night against Hanover. The game was held on a chilly evening and the surface of the field made life difficult at the start for the team to connect on the ground. After a frantic opening fifteen minutes, freshman Amanda Arnone broke the deadlock with a nice finish in a one on one break from a clever pass through from Kiersten Hening. A few minutes later, Hening again delivered a wonderfully disguised pass to the feet of Lindsey Keith who then doubled the lead. In the closing minutes of the half, Hening decided to add one of her own to the tally and had a 30-35 yard rocket over the keeper’s head to make it 3-0 at half. Erin Siedlecki was credited with the assist to Hening’s stunning goal.
The second half began and the Rapids picked up where they left off in the first. Rachel Leipold put continuous pressure on the Hanover defense and that led to penalty kick being awarded to the Rapids after Leipold was brought down a few yards from goal. Hening stepped up to the mark and buried the penalty kick, six minutes into the second half. For the remaining 30 minutes or so, the Rapids saw all of their players see time on the field and have moments of possession domination, quick counter attacks, and good defensive responsibility to preserve the clean sheet for Abby Rieck. Rachel Leipold grabbed the last goal from a poorly defended corner kick by Hanover. The ball found its way past several players and at the feet of Leipold who tapped the ball over the line.
The game finished 5-0, no cards, no injuries, and everyone seeing some time that evening.
The Rapids will face Monacan at home on Tuesday, March 21st at 5:30 and 7:00. Come out and support both JV and Varsity!
