The James River baseball program is entering its first season under new coach, Bryan Hannum. Coach Hannum has been an assistant coach at James River, under Coach Pete Schumacher, for the past six years. He is very excited about this year’s team and cannot wait to begin the season:
“This year’s motto is “BELIEVE”. We truly feel that this mindset is essential if we want to achieve what I know we can this season. We have been flying around having great practices, and I just want to start playing other teams and see what we can really do.”
This year’s team has high expectations, returning five starters from last year and having nine seniors. (SR) Peyton McCann, (SR) Hampton McClellan, (JR) Skylar Petry, and (JR) Andrew Winder anchor a pitching staff that will be tough to beat. (JR) Tucker Bushby, (JR) Thomas Jordan, (SR) Cabell Early, (SR) Chris Thompson), (SR) Seth McNeace, (SR) Alan Cota, and (SR) Tanner White all saw action at the plate last year for the Rapids. This year’s lineup should be scrappy and tough.
James River’s defense will hopefully prove to be the backbone of this team. Led by (JR) Shortstop Thomas Jordan, (JR) center fielder Tucker Bushby, and (SR) catcher Seth McNeace, James River, up the middle, is very strong defensively.
“It always helps when you have that much experience and athleticism up the middle. Not many baseballs are going to drop this year,” says Coach Hannum. Thomas Jordan has been James River’s starting shortstop since his Freshman year. “He brings a lot of experience and maturity to the game. I feel very comfortable knowing he is our guy at shortstop.” Tucker Busby is no stranger to center field as he started every game there last season for the Rapids. As for their catcher, “You do not get to coach very many Seth McNeace’s. He is a kid that can play anywhere in the field, he will do whatever he asks, and he is here for the right reasons. He wants to win and have fun.”
There are high expectation this year as there is every year for the James River baseball team. “I just hope to continue where Coach Schumacher left off. He did a great job building a program and culture here. I intend to keep it that way.” Coach Hannum will be assisted by Greg Dommisse, Pete Schumacher, Cameron Koehler, and Brian Marshall. The JV baseball team is led by Head Coach Dennis Pasquantino, assisted by Jeff Bourassa, Jon Keller, and Bill Bray.
James River’s Varsity baseball team has their first scrimmage tonight(March 10) at home (Dave Cottrell Field) at 6:30pm. James River’s JV team will play before the varsity team tonight at 4:30. The Rapids open their season up next week at home against L.C. Bird at 6:00pm. JV will travel to L.C. Bird and their game will begin at 4:30.
