Tryouts will be February 20-23 from 2:30-4:00 either at the practice field by the front of the school or in the gym. Cleats, indoor soccer shoes, shinguards, and appropriate training gear will be needed. Contact Ian Stowe with any questions.

The James River Girl’s Soccer Program provides a unique, competitive, and educational environment for players to develop relationships with teammates and coaches, compete for Conference, Regional, and State championships, and to ultimately enjoy their high school soccer playing experiences. The program provides an opportunity for players to compete for spots, balance academics and athletics efficiently, and enjoy the company of friends, teammates, and coaches on a social aspect through team bonding, fundraisers, etc. Players are expected to be responsible, accountable, and committed to their academics, their team, and the goals of the program as a whole both on and off the field.

An informational meeting is usually held late October to gather interest from players wanting to tryout for the teams. Another meeting is usually held in January to go over plans for preseason training and tryouts. Preseason training/conditioning begins early/mid February and will last two weeks. Tryouts are held at the end of February and usually last 3-4 days. Training usually runs from 2:30-4:00 and Fridays are typically off for rest and recovery heading into the weekend.

Two weeks in early/mid February is the only scheduled preseason conditioning. Players are expected to come into preseason with a good base fitness, therefore individual training and fitness needs to begin earlier than February.

Tryouts will include both small-sided and big-sided competition games to identify players’ abilities technically, tactically, and physically throughout the 3-4 days. Both coaches are looking for players willing to work for their teammates, have a good attitude and are coach-able, and lastly, understand the tactics (decision making) and have the technique (footwork, skills, etc.) to be able to play quickly and effectively.

Players will need a current physical dated after May 1st of that tryout year and a signed concussion form before they can tryout. If a form is missing, that player may not participate or compete in preseason or tryouts.

Players will need all the proper equipment too. Soccer cleats, shin guards, socks, shorts, water, etc…

Team Highlghts:
The James River Girl’s Soccer teams have shown tremendous growth in the past few years with winning seasons for both JV and Varsity teams. Since the 2013 season, the 2015 Varsity team has knocked off three number one ranked teams from the Richmond Times Dispatch Top Ten Poll on back to back to back occasions and has accumulated a 42W-22L-5T record . The team has been to three conference semifinals and a regional quarterfinal since 2013. The 2015 team were runners-up in Conference 3 and advanced to Regionals for the first time in several years. In addition to the team successes since 2013, the program has had eight players graduate to go on and play college soccer. Six have gone on to play Division I and two to go play Division III.
